The Nishit Saran Foundation was started by Mina and Raj Saran in the memory
of their brilliant son Nishit in April 2006. Nishit was an alumnus of Harvard College and the Army Public School. He was a talented filmmaker who chose to come back to India to work. His first movie ‘Summer In My Veins’ became a global success and was screened in most film festivals. His exemplary courage to use his medium of art to help him express himself to his mother that he was a homosexual made him an icon in that world he so assiduously worked to free from the parochial confines of double standards. As an alumnus of the Army Public School an institute Nishit made proud over and again we found avid support and thus instituted a running best all-rounder trophy, with a cash award of five thousand rupees given each year to one student from that school. As a young filmaker Nishit was fortunate to use state of the art equipment of the early 2000’s. We want to encourage young filmmakers who are of similar zeal and talent but are bereft of the funds to achieve their goals. We hope to provide them with all the support that is within our means to help them accomplish their creative pursuits. The English language has become the lingua franca of the world. In India, however the language has created a dichotomy between the classes, wherein you are viewed as part of the elite if you speak fluent English even though you may only be a matriculate. The Foundation is now preparing a unique syllabus for proficiency in the English language. A program which envisages the development of eighteen modules to be taught over four years. We realize as many others do that language like so much in life is an acquired skill and quite simply consistent exposure in a hear-read-speak and write format over a period of time is all that it takes to develop an impressive command of any language. To bridge this difference which creates unequal job opportunities we have started ‘Next Step’ a free school in Noida where we are teaching spoken English to just anyone who is interested. The computer today has become the most basic of tools to drive almost anything we do. Therefore we thought it prudent to provide a platform to anyone who wanted to arm themselves with this most essential skill. The combination of learning English and computers we feel is the perfect mix to strengthen ones aspirations and feel confident to face any daunting economic environment. Encouraged by the keenness of so many to hone their skills to augment their pecuniary situation we are now involved in starting a regular school that would fund our effort to teach English and computers to many more. We welcome your support in sharing with us your expertise and all other financial and infrastructural inputs for the school in Noida. This could specifically translate into computers and peripherals, classroom furniture, and stationery. Nishit was a personality who befriended most he came in contact with, he helped so many of us to see and remove our veils of hypocrisy. In gratitude then to our son, friend and star we offer ourselves in service to our fellow-beings. |
